As the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) welcomes students for the 2026–2027 academic year, the University is strengthening its commitment to student success through continued investment in faculty and staff development.
UCCI’s Professional Development Week 2026, held from 10–14 August, brought faculty, staff and university leaders together for five days of professional learning, collaboration and reflection focused on strengthening the student experience and advancing institutional excellence.
The annual programme provided faculty and staff from across the University with opportunities to strengthen professional practice, exchange ideas and explore how UCCI can continue to enhance the quality of its teaching, student services and institutional operations. Central to the programme was a shared commitment to ensuring that the University’s continued growth and development translate into meaningful outcomes for students.
This year’s programme focused on four key areas: student success, institutional readiness, collaboration and continuous improvement. Sessions addressed academic and registration readiness, creating an engaging student experience, technology and financial readiness, accreditation and professional development. Together, the sessions provided participants with a broader understanding of how the University’s academic and administrative functions work collectively to support student success.
A dedicated Student Success Dashboard session placed data and student outcomes at the centre of discussions, examining measures including retention, persistence, completion and the overall student experience. Faculty and staff also participated in an Executive Leadership Panel on working together to deliver an exceptional student experience, reinforcing the importance of collaboration across the University.
Professional Development Week also provided an opportunity to strengthen UCCI’s institutional culture. Sessions on Building a Culture of Excellence and the ONE UCCI Commitment encouraged faculty and staff to reflect on their individual and collective roles in advancing the University’s mission and priorities. An interactive “If I Were President/Provost for a Day” session further invited participants to share ideas and perspectives on the University’s future.
President and Chief Executive Officer Nanalie Cover thanked faculty, staff, presenters and facilitators for their contributions and encouraged the University community to translate the ideas and commitments developed during the week into action throughout the academic year.
“Professional Development Week provides an important opportunity for us to come together as ONE UCCI, reflect on how we serve our students and identify where we can continue to improve. Student success is a shared responsibility, and every member of our University community has a role to play in creating an environment where our students can thrive.
“As we begin the new academic year, our focus is on carrying this spirit of collaboration forward and turning our conversations into meaningful action that strengthens the experience we provide for every student.”
The programme also recognised that a strong university community depends on the well-being, safety and professional growth of its people. Faculty and staff participated in Darkness to Light – Stewards of Children training, while the final day included a Wellness Strategy session focused on supporting a safe, healthy and effective University environment. Faculty Division Meetings provided additional opportunities for academic teams to prepare collectively for the semester ahead.
Following Professional Development Week, UCCI faculty and staff participated in two weeks of academic advising and registration for new and returning students. This period provided an immediate opportunity to put the week’s discussions into practice as colleagues worked across the University to help students make informed academic decisions, navigate university processes and prepare for the semester ahead.
That preparation has now moved into the classroom, with Fall 2026 classes beginning on 31 August and welcoming new and returning students to UCCI for the start of the new academic year.
As the Cayman Islands’ national university, UCCI recognises that investing in its people is an investment in the quality of education and support provided to students. By strengthening the knowledge, practices and collaboration of those who teach, guide and support learners, the University is better positioned to respond to evolving student needs, advance academic and institutional excellence, and contribute to the continued development of the Cayman Islands.
